History of Hoag

The idea to create the Hoag health network dates back to 1944 when the Rev. Raymond Brahams, seven Presbyterian church members and one physician came together to form the Presbyterian Hospital of Laguna Beach. The dream didn?t become a reality until 1950 when the Hoag Family Foundation, which had been established 10 years earlier by George Hoag, Sr., successfully raised the funds for the hospital. Within two years of the Hoag Family Foundation?s involvement, the hospital was completed and named Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. At the time of its opening on September 15, 1952, the hospital had 74 beds, 68 staff physicians and 60 employees.

Today, the two founding organizations, the George Hoag Family Foundation and the Association of Presbyterian Members, continue to provide leadership to the health network as corporate members of the Hoag corporation. The corporate members elect the board of directors, which consists of representatives from the Hoag community and medical staff, each year.
